What does the Clean Industrial Deal mean for state aid?

02 April 2025 | 08:30 - 10:00 CET | In-person only - Brussels

The European Commission announced that improvements to the current state aid framework would be a key component of the Clean Industrial Deal and the Affordable Energy Action Plan recently released.

In this session, Fabien Roques, Anton Burger and Mathieu Gimenez will provide perspectives on how economic experts' inputs have evolved over the past years to contribute to the Commission's state aid review process in relation to a range of state aid projects in the energy and industrial sectors.

Compass Lexecon experts will in particular draw on their experience in the recent decision from the European Commission to approve the State aid measures to extend the lifetime of two nuclear reactors in Belgium to highlight the role of economists in relation to the assessment of the necessity, appropriateness, proportionality, and impact on competition of State Aid cases in electricity markets.
