Bernardo Sarmento, Vice President, has been appointed as the head of Compass Lexecon’s Lisbon office.

With over 13 years’ experience advising lawyers and corporate clients in several EU jurisdictions with a particular emphasis on Portugal and Spain, Bernardo is well-placed to lead the growing team in Lisbon.

Bernardo has extensive experience in damages cases in Portugal and other jurisdictions (e.g., ethylene, envelopes, motor vehicles, heavy trucks, raw milk, pre-fabricated modular constructions, fresh milk, raw wood) and has testified multiple times in the Competition, Regulation and Supervision Court in Portugal and various Commercial Courts in Spain. He has advised on several high-profile mergers before the European Commission (including Cargotec/Konecranes and E.ON/Innogy), the Portuguese competition authority (Vodafone/ Nowo) and other national competition authorities (including Vodafone/ Three UK JV). He has also advised on investigations into anticompetitive agreements and abuse of dominance.

Bernardo commented: “I look forward to expanding our service capabilities in Portugal, leveraging Compass Lexecon’s broad pool of exceptional economists and experts and our knowledge of the Portuguese market to offer the high-quality work that is characteristic of our firm.”

Jorge Padilla, Chairman of CL EMEA commented: “I look forward to working closely with Bernardo and the team to continue to offer first-class service to the Portuguese market, where we see huge potential driven by the increasingly active Competition Authority and a growing private litigation landscape.”

The Lisbon team is also excited to work with Senior Consultant and renowned IO Professor Luis Cabral, who recently affiliated with the firm and will be working with the team on cases in Portugal.
