Leading Healthcare Economist Professor Craig Garthwaite Affiliates with Compass Lexecon

We are excited to announce that Craig Garthwaite has affiliated with Compass Lexecon. He is the Herman R. Smith Research Professor in Hospital and Health Services, a Professor of Strategy, and the Director of the Program on Healthcare at the Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management.

Professor Garthwaite studies questions central to the economics and strategy of healthcare, including how the biopharmaceutical sector, insurance markets, and healthcare services interact with government policies and regulations.

In the biopharmaceutical market, he has examined the effect of changes in market size on investments in new product development, the evolving world of precision medicine, the effect of expanded patent protection on pricing, the innovation response of United States pharmaceutical firms to increases in demand, and the relationship between health insurance expansions and high drug prices.

In other sectors of healthcare, Professor Garthwaite has analyzed the expected role of artificial intelligence in healthcare, the impact and operation of Medicaid Managed Care, the responses of non-profit hospitals to financial shocks, and the economic effects of expanded social insurance programs such as Medicaid and Medicare for All.

Professor Garthwaite’s research has appeared in the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the American Economic Review, and the New England Journal of Medicine, among others. Professor Garthwaite is also a frequent media commentator, appearing in outlets including the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and The New York Times. He has also appeared as a guest on various television and radio shows such as Nightly Business Report and NPR Marketplace.

Professor Garthwaite is also an experienced expert witness in litigation matters, including being deposed and testifying at trial for matters involving issues such as antitrust, the False Claims Act, transfer pricing, the negative impacts of government policies, and damages for clients including Amgen, CVS, the Department of Justice, Merck, and the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association. He has also testified before the US Senate, the US House of Representatives, and state legislatures on issues related to healthcare markets, prescription drugs, the minimum wage, and healthcare reforms.
