World Renowned Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Expert Tomas J. Philipson Affiliates with Compass Lexecon

Compass Lexecon is delighted to announce that Professor Tomas J. Philipson has affiliated with the firm as a Senior Expert. Professor Philipson holds the Daniel Levin Chair of Public Policy at the University of Chicago, Irving B. Harris Graduate School of Public Policy and is the Director of Health Economics at the Becker Friedman Institute at the University. He is also a co-founder of the national health economics consultancy Precision Health Economics LLC which was acquired in 2015.

Professor Philipson has received numerous worldwide academic research awards. He is a two-time winner of the highest award of his field, the Arrow Award of The International Health Economics Association. He also received the Garfield Award for Economic Research, the Prêmio Haralambos Simeonidis from the Brazilian Economic Association, and the Milken Institute's Distinguished Economic Research Award.

In 2003-2004 Professor Philipson was the senior economic advisor to the heads of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). In 2008 he served as a senior health care advisor for Senator McCain's 2008 presidential campaign. He was appointed to the Key Indicator Commission by the Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2012, and in 2015 served as a scientific advisor to the House of Representatives' initiative, 21st Century Cures.

Professor Philipson is widely published in refereed journals in the areas of health care economics, valuation, regulation and public health, among others. His work has also appeared in many popular press sources including, Fox News, The Economist, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. He authors a monthly op-ed column in Forbes.

Professor Philipson has consulted for many Fortune 100 companies, the World Bank, the World Intellectual Property Organization, and the OECD. He has provided expert testimony in many high profile cases, including the first case brought under the Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act (BPCIA) in the US.

Professor Philipson received a B.A. in mathematics from Uppsala University in Sweden, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the Wharton School and the University of Pennsylvania.
