Aurelien Portuese is a Research Professor and the Founding Director of the Competition & Innovation Lab at the George Washington University. He is a Senior Consultant at Compass Lexecon in Washington, DC providing expertise in antitrust law and economics both in the U.S. and in the EU. Professor Portuese is also a Special Editor of the Antitrust Law Journal for the symposium ‘Beyond Dynamic Competition’, and a member of the Jury of the Antitrust Writing Awards of Concurrences.
Professor Portuese is also a Researcher at the College de France of the University of Paris (PSL) where he works with Professor Philippe Aghion on innovation economics at the Farhi Innovation Lab. Previously, Dr. Portuese was an adjunct professor at George Mason University, the founding director of the Schumpeter Project on Competition Policy at the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, and a professor at various universities in the United Kingdom and France. He was also a visiting researcher at the Center for Competition Law and Policy at the University of Oxford. Dr. Portuese is an accomplished thought leader. His forthcoming book in 2025, "The Battle for the Future of Antitrust. Brandeis, Bork and Schumpeter" juxtaposes the legacies of Louis Brandeis, Robert Bork, and Joseph Schumpeter to offer an insightful analysis of the forces shaping the future of antitrust. By tracing the historical evolution of antitrust law through economic theory and examining the ongoing debates that define today’s regulatory environment, the author provides a comprehensive yet accessible guide to the competing schools of thought in this critical field. Professor Portuese has also published two other books: "Algorithmic Antitrust" in 2022 and "The Principle of Economic Efficiency in the European Case Law" in 2014.
Additionally, his articles on antitrust have been published in journals including the Antitrust Law Journal, Stanford Journal of Law, Business & Finance, Journal of Economic Affairs, Journal of Law, Economics & Policy, European Journal of Law & Economics, George Mason Law Review, Columbia Journal of European Law, Manchester Journal of International Economic Law, European Law Journal, Concurrences, Competition Policy International. Dr. Portuese has also written numerous op-eds, short articles, and public comments for regulatory authorities.
Professor Portuese is a member of the jury of the Antitrust Writing Awards organized by Concurrences and the GW Law School. He is also a consultant for the World Bank and a member of the intergovernmental group of experts on Competition Law and Policy of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Dr. Portuese frequently speaks at conferences and private events.
