Dr. Erin Smith is a Senior Vice President at Compass Lexecon. Her experience includes assessing the materiality of financial disclosures, calculating ill-gotten gains and investor harm, applying statistical techniques to detect market manipulation and investment advisor abuse, valuing companies and complex securities, and assessing suitability and turnover analyses related to investment advisor abuse. She also has extensive policy and rulemaking experience in areas such as securities offerings and repurchases, registration requirements, corporate disclosures, shareholder voting, beneficial ownership reporting, and insider trading.

Dr. Smith was previously an Assistant Director in the Division of Economic and Risk Analysis (DERA) at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). During her time at the SEC, she was a Supervisory Economist in the Office of Litigation where she provided economic analysis on matters related to the SEC's Division of Enforcement, including investment advisor fraud, accounting misstatements, insider trading, market manipulation, and other types of securities misconduct. Dr. Smith has worked on more than seventy investigations and lawsuits. She has provided expert and summary witness testimony on behalf of the SEC and the Department of Justice in nine cases.

Prior to joining the SEC, Dr. Smith was an Assistant Professor at the University of Rochester where she taught courses on Corporate Finance and Applied Econometrics at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels. She has also been a member of the teaching faculty at the University of Utah’s Eccles School of Business. Dr. Smith has published academic research in the Quarterly Journal of Finance and the Review of Corporate Finance. She holds a Ph.D. in finance from NYU's Stern School of Business and an undergraduate degree in economics from Dartmouth College.
