James is a Senior Economist at Compass Lexecon, based in London.

James has nearly a decade of experience in competition economics consulting, with a focus on various sectors including insurance, finance, technology and pharmaceuticals. His expertise extends to other sectors such as agriculture, retail, groceries, education, and automotive.

In merger control, James has provided advice in high-profile cases before competition authorities such as the European Commission, the UK Competition and Markets Authority, and other national authorities. Notable among these are Phase 2 cases such as Aon's planned acquisition of Willis Towers Watson, the planned merger between Sainsbury's and Asda, and BP's planned acquisition of Woolworths. Additionally, he has contributed to Phase 1 mergers including P&G/Merck and Marsh/JLT mergers before the EC, and IRI/Aztec, Whittan/Apex and McGraw-Hill Education’s planned acquisition of Cengage before the CMA, among others. He also has experience in global cases where merger control clearance was required in multiple jurisdictions.


Antitrust investigations form a significant part of James' portfolio, including the EC's investigation into information exchange in SSA bonds and Euro denominated bonds, and the Amazon marketplace investigation.

In the area of private damages litigation, James has supported clients before the Competition Appeal Tribunal and other courts, tackling issues related to cartels and abuses of dominance. Examples include advising a truck manufacturer in follow-on damages proceedings, offering assistance in a retail sector arbitration case, and providing advice in a UK class action suit against Apple.

James holds an MSc in Economics from University College London, where he specialised in the fields of industrial organization and econometrics, and a BSc in Economics and Econometrics from the University of Bristol.
