Matthew Backus
Senior Consultant
Matthew Backus is a Senior Consultant with Compass Lexecon. He is also a professor in the Haas School of Business as well as the Economics Department at the University of California, Berkeley, where he teaches courses on antitrust, microeconomics, and industrial organization for undergraduate, MBA, and PhD students. Previously, he taught at Columbia University and Cornell University.
Professor Backus has published widely in the top academic outlets in economics, such as Econometrica, The Quarterly Journal of Economics, The Journal of Political Economy, The Review of Economic Studies, Management Science, American Economic Journal: Microeconomics, and others. His work—which combines economic theory and empirical methods—spans antitrust, productivity, bargaining, auctions, and online platforms.
Professor Backus is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, and a Research Affiliate of the Centre for Economic and Policy Research. His work has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation as well as the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
